Where to Start When Writing a Successful Screenplay?
Find Your Film's Intent

Writing a film script is an exciting process!
Who hasn’t dreamed of making their own movie?

But be careful! A common mistake is to jump straight into writing dialogues. In the short term, it may feel like your script is progressing, but after a few pages, you may lose perspective on your story and lose sight of the film’s meaning. Nothing is more discouraging.

First and foremost, you need direction
To write a great story, here’s some advice: don’t write anything just yet, put down your pen, and close your eyes… Think about the purpose of your story. Ask yourself: why do I want to tell this particular story? Where did it come from? What was the spark? What meaning do I want to give my film?
The “meaning” is the reason for your film’s existence; it is its significance, its deep identity. Meaning contains the values you will incorporate into your story. It is both its justification and its ultimate purpose.
Don’t let your ideas slip away. Open your eyes, pick up your pen, and write a valuable intent document by answering these questions:
  • Why this film?
  • What is its purpose?
  • What proverb or moral can summarize the film?
  • Is there a key scene you immediately visualize, one that inspires you, excites you, and pushes you to embark on this story?
Over time, you will find the answers and begin to define your true intent. Exploring meaning helps you understand what you really want to say. Once this document is ready, keep it safe. From now on, you won’t lose your way during the writing phase. If you start feeling uninspired, reread your intent document. It will feel like a fresh breeze after a dry journey. This paper is your compass and your driving force. It reminds you where you need to go and why you are so determined to get there.

And that’s it?

Yes! Answering the above questions is more than enough to set your film’s goal and give you a clear direction. A successful script is, above all, a coherent script.
